RE: Economy Downturn

HerenThere - we'll be looking for you. You're absolutely correct, waiting for the tomorrow that may never come is generally a good way to insure that it never will come :E sailor53 - been there, done that many years ago. The result was the same as renting to SuzieQ Renter, after the credit check, etc. etc. when hubby stopped paying support she stopped paying the rent. It took one of those big garbage cans they bring and drop of at construction sites to clean out the mess and considerable repairing/painting at the end of the 6 months it took to get her out. Yup, you only have to get burned once to understand that you don't want to do that again! Barb

RE: Grocery coupons

Obviously a lot of fulltimers who are in one place for long periods of time - hence the ability to store and freeze large quantities of items on sale. For those of us who move around, it isn't that simple. Even finding a local Sunday newspaper may not be the easy! I have found that it pays to get one of the customer loyalty card when you arrive in a new area. And check out where the card can be used - sometimes the store names change, but the card can still be used in the new area. Barb

RE: Economy Downturn

If one sets themselves up ahead of time to address the above, then they have met their obligations and should feel free to fulltime in a recreational vehicle setting right up to the end. I can't tell you how much we appreciate your deciding that we should feel free to fulltime because we have plans in place. :p Barb

RE: Traveling cats

We have a DP - the motorhome makes it so much easier for the cats. When the engine starts they get into their spots (yes, each has a separate spot) on the couch and curl up and sleep about 4 hours - that's normally all we drive. We don't feed in the morning when we travel - our old girl (18) has motion sickness. Occasionally if the road is VERY twisting both will start gagging, but that is very rare. When we have the coach serviced/worked on, we put them in the car (with litter box and water) and they do very well - - start the car and put them in their carriers and they think they are going to the vet's and start to howl! RE: Economy Downturn

So I guess my position is that, IMHO, one should not be fulltiming at the expense of resources which should have been available so as to easily quit the fulltiming for whatever reason(s) and not be a time, energy, or finances burden on loved ones or friends when the time comes that you cannot fulltime any more. Probably most fulltimers have their lives arranged so as to have no problems in situations such as the above. You don't want to full-time, we all understand that. But please don't tell the rest of us what we should do. When we can't full-time anymore, we'll park the rig. If we can't handle the rig, we sure and heck don't want the work and headache of a house! And if we want to live out our life in an RV park in our rig or a park model, how does that make us somehow unsavory people? Barb

RE: Who is in AZ for the winter?

We will be there the first of February for a little over 2 months doing the full-timers bounce. Barb

RE: Economy Downturn

The housing market will always flucuate. Actually my home has appreciated greatly, even in this declining market. What I was trying to say was you still have bills whether in a rig or a S&B, only the rig depreciates every year where as a home will most likely appreciate. So selling a home which is an investment and turning around and putting that money into a trailer which depreciates quickly is a scary thing to do. Scary is when you start waking up from surgery and hear them talking about the fact that the 'cyst' was cancerous! Beating that and my DH recovering from his stroke made us see that we wanted to be able to enjoy seeing this great country and that we weren't going to sit and let life pass us by. You make it sound like no one ever lost money on a house. We owned 5 houses over 40 years. Made money when selling three, lost money selling two. We didn't have time to wait for markets to improve as each move was the result of career advancement. And that doesn't take into consideration the amount of money required to keep a home going. Roofs to be replaced, heating (boiler or furnace) needing to be maintained/fixed. Hot water heaters have to be replaced. Landscaping needs to be maintained. Plumbing problems, well problems, etc. In other words, a house owns its owner.:B Then there is the property taxes/insurance each year - much, much, MUCH more than what we pay now. But as was said before, full-timing is not for everyone. Barb

RE: Economy Downturn

JMHO For me the scariest thing would be to sell my 'paid for' home and put that money into an RV that depreciates signifcantly as you drive it off the lot and continues from there. I'm thinking that since my stick and brick home is paid for, living in an RV would not be cheaper. {Don't suggest renting out my home. I've heard to many horror stories about what renters do. Now, don't get your panties in a bind! I'm aware that there are good ones, too. lol} There is the insurance, tags, fuel, campground fees and if you own it long enough it will need things like tires, a new roof, batteries, perhaps replaced windows and flooring. Therefore I conclude that it's a state of mind thing. Not really - it is a state of being free. But not everyone will feel comfortable with this freedom. Which is why you aren't a full-timer. I also know a lot of people who are sitting with mortgages on their homes which have depreciated in the past 2-3 years. Barb

RE: Economy Downturn

Never get into a mindset that full time RV living can be done "forever" ... that would be a dangerous thinking rut to get into. Why? Obviously you don't know about Escapees and the Care Center. There are people who are living out their years at the Care Center until they reach the point where they need nursing care. Same as anyone with an apartment/house. Lots of people live out the remainder of their years in RVs that they have had for a long time. It is sad that you think you HAVE to have a S&B mindset in order to full-time because you will never know the feeling of freedom that comes from NOT having to worry about a house sitting somewhere. RE: Full Timer Financing

We found a new Allegro Bus we really liked. The sales person told us that since we didn't really own physical property it would be almost impossible to get financing as a "full timer". Has anyone else ben told this and if so what did you do about it? Thanks Bob W Ask him if he wants to make a sale - then see how hard he works to find you financing. Barb

RE: Has it changed any?

Drive off and leave them once...they'll change their "tune". Oh I guarantee you there would be a different tune alright! One that the driver would not want to hear. And it would be the driver who would change! :M Barb

RE: Has it changed any?

Good Country song about this topic. "Waitin' on a woman" It's a universal problem caused by women's sufferage. Once we gave them the vote, and let them drive cars, we were relegated to the status of second class citizens. Just relax and enjoy the ride. If you are very, very lucky, she will outlive you. Just for the record - my DH is the reason that we don't leave early in the morning. He operates on Dave Time, which means a civilized 10:00 am for anything! Barb

RE: License Rig in Which State?

I thought you guys were referring to the "RV Club" in the name rather than just Escapees. :S Isn't it good to know that we all have problems with fingers flying on the keyboard!:B Barb

RE: License Rig in Which State?

Let me suggest that you consider joining the Escapees RV Club which will give you a Texas address and legal domicile, which can be used for all needed functions. Escpaees is far more than a mail service but they are the only complete support system for we who live and travel full-time in our RVs. Don't you mean...Escapees Club??? No, it is the Escapees RV Club. Barb

RE: Coastal Washington State

There is a fantastic loop drive that you could do. Head up I-5 and at Burlington take Highway 20 over the North Cascade Highway. Stop in Marblemount at Tootsies for pie on the way over. The pass is GORGEOUS - a perfect alpine pass. You then come down into Winthrop and into Eastern Washington. You can go down to Chelan and take a boat ride up Lake Chelan to Steihekin. From Chelan go down to Highway 2 to cross back over the Cascades through Stevens Pass and be sure to stop in Leavenworth. Barb

RE: Has it changed any?

Back in the days of the cavemen, when the saber tooth came into the homestead, only a simple yell and the wife and kids were ready to move. Now it seems that when the old man wants to hit the road early, and the same " simple yell" is heard in the homestead "rv",. Nothing happens, no movement, nothing, I ask, have things changed or do we not yell loud enough..? Even with an "early warning" given nothing happens.. After I get an answer or two, remind me to erase this post before the wife sees it.. You are getting an answer - you just refuse to acknowledge it!

RE: Buyers remorse?

One of the things to consider is that with the bigger MHs and multiple slides, there is more room needed for the slide mechanisms, etc. Hydraulics take up room. And there are probably other features that you have now that you didn't have before that the mechanics take up room. And things always look larger without 'stuff' in them. I lost a set of drawers when we had the w/d put in - but I wouldn't want to go back. Look at this as an opportunity to thin out some of the 'stuff'. We all know that we travel with more stuff than we need!:B

RE: Annie is in trouble (anesthesia)

We had a kitten who had distemper at 8 weeks of age (came home from the Humane Society with it!) and while she could hear before she became sick (loved to go hunt the bell toy that first couple of days), afterwards she was deaf. She lived to a ripe old age of 18 - and most people couldn't tell she was deaf as she used vibrations, a terrific peripheral vision, and odors to maintain her place in her environment. It is amazing how well they can adapt if they are provided support and love. Barb

RE: What do you do when you don't have a physical address?

Phil, I'm not sure I understand why you can't stay in your MH full-time in a seasonal site? This is very strange. Find a new campground and get a monthly site. That said, Chicago certainly isn't an area to full-time in for the winter. Barb

RE: Is this logical?

The first mountain pass I drove down made me appreciate going with the DP - pushed the toggle switch and the exhaust brake did the work on the way down. No white knuckles. And the ride is so comfortable - we are not exhausted when we get to our destination. Yes, repair work is more expensive, both the engines and transmissions on DP tend to go forever. If we only used it for weekends/vacations then a gasser would work - but for a full-timer having all of the CCC of a DP is really great. Barb
